Great place. We have been here before, but we think this is my first review here. (Turns out, no, I did previously review here and now it is time to up the game and give it that extra star it definitely deserves! (I had only had one item previously so not much to review but it was great) . However, today, it was a little busy. It took a little bit before a server arrived at the table but not too bad because it gave us time to really peruse their extensive menu. AFTER perusing the extensive menu, Wifey got THE EXACT same thing she gets at EVERY Indian cuisine restaurant! For the appetizer we got the veg combo platter. Wifey ordered Chana Masala with rice and garlic naan and a mango lassi. I got the Aloo paneer chili masala and a maharaja beer. Hers is THE standby and mine is new. This Indian beer, the Maharaja is a brightly yellow color. As my fans know, I'm a stout/porter kinda guy, so I didn't expect much, but I wanted an Indian beer. It was DELICIOUS!!! Color me SURPRISED! The appetizer was very good. All three parts. Of the three sauces, the green chili cilantro chutney was AMAZING. The tamarind was also very tasty, and the third was the red onion sauce. The green was SO good that the others disappeared. The garlic naan was what was expected, but the size was giant!!! It was super dipped in the green sauce. My main dish: Having never had it before, I didn't know what to expect. The sauce was a little slow, but came out more with subsequent bites. The first taste was a bit bland, but after a palette cleanse, further eating was so worth it. I enjoyed it all, AND this portion was huge. The heat comes on as you eat, and you're glad for the water pitcher by the end. Wifey's Chana Masala was pretty different than so many of the others she has had with the flavor profile she loves (rather simple, or, more basic) with some being much better than others. This one really was different. It was richer and had quite a bit more depth. She said it was very good and she very much appreciated the complexities of flavor, not quite what she expected, but in a really good way. So, to sum up this little review, we LOVE the place and it ranks way up on our list of favorites.
Tasty dishes with generous portion sizes and fair prices. Staff are friendly and attentive. Nice ambiance. Love dining here!
Great Indian food, and very friendly service too, seems to be a family run restaurant, the price was pretty reasonable. Highly recommend!
We live out of town, so lunch at Kohinoor is a feature of our trips to Champaign-Urbana. On previous visits we've always ordered a thali lunch but we could never finish them, so this time we decided to order off the regular menu. DH got a paneer and chickpea curry and I got the lamb biryani, which was really good. We shared a freshly-baked (not reheated!) naan. Well, DH couldn't finish his curry and I couldn't finish my biryani, even with his help. We couldn't even finish the naan. Moreover, all around us were tables with happy customers enjoying the lunch thali. Next time, I'm ordering the thali!
The best Indian food in town! The naan serving size is extremely generous as you get the entire thing and not slices. The lamb biriyani is my typical order here and it never gets old. The meat is extremely tender and goes very well with the rice and yogurt all together. I additionally love the samosa appetizer. You get two large samosas with a variety of chutneys to try out. Each one of them are unique and tasty in their own way. The interior isn't really my vibe but the workers are all very nice and attentive.
I came here with my boyfriend to celebrate, and to say the least I was blown away. We ordered chicken biriyani and chicken tikka masala. My boyfriend LOVED the chicken biriyani and the portions were big enough that he had to take half of it home. The chicken tikka masala was so creamy and savory. I got it with the naan instead do the rice and the naan was more than twice the size of my hand. Everything was delicious and the servers were great.
Alone in Champagne, no kid in sight = date night! I don't know why we went with Indian food when the city has some great eats, especially because we're very critical of it. Upon entering, Kohinoor is clean and inviting, colorfully painted and decorated. Though it was Friday night and busy, service was prompt and friendly. We ordered garlic lamb, lamb saag, and a half tandoori chicken. Whats great about this place is that each entree comes with your choice of naan or basmati rice, they are not ale carte items . Here's the one and only let down. In came the tandoori chicken in it's typical presentation, a sizzler platter for all to hear. This chicken was at least a day old. It was simply reheated and placed on a sizzler platter. There was no taste of marination, no smoky fragrance from a tandoor. It had that dry shrunken, fall apart consistency of day old microwaved chicken as you would get with your day old Popeyes at home. You cannot fool me with your tandoori chicken Kohinoor. Other than that, both lamb dishes were delicious, I love that one can choose their spice levels. All meat curry items are boneless. The naan came out surprisingly fast as sometimes you get food and then wait for naan. Desserts were good. I like that they put a full layer of pista (pistachio) underneath the kulfi where most indian restaurants skimp on it. The prices were also reasonable compared to prices in chicagoland. I will be back but please please step your tandoori game up!
Excellent Kohinoor mixed tandoori grill and homemade paneer. We got one of the spicy Bhuna paneer dishes in particular. The service is pretty decent. I like that they leave a water carafe on the table so they don't have to constantly come by filling up your glass. The Kohinoor mixed tandoori grill is pretty awesome and is a lot to eat so be hungry or be prepared to take some to go. It has 4 different preparations of chicken, delicious seekh lamb kabobs, fish, and tandoori shrimp. Their mango Lassi is also on point.
